LED is a current driven device. It always needs a resistor in series or some other current limiting device. If you are replacing an original LED in a car I would suggest you use a proper replacement. If you are trying to replace an existing incandescent bulb with LEDs, you definitely need a resistor.
Do LED brake lights need a load resistor?
LED lights are excellent when powered directly from the battery or in addition to an existing circuit; however, this is not the case when used to replace OEM tail-lights. … Load resistors are needed on indicator lights and, depending on the base vehicle, perhaps on tail, stop and reversing lights as well.
Do LED lights need resistors?
LEDs typically require 10 to 20mA, the datasheet for the LED will detail this along with the forward voltage drop. For example an ultra bright blue LED with a 9V battery has a forward voltage of 3.2V and typical current of 20mA. So the resistor needs to be 290 ohms or as close as is available.
What happens if you don’t use a resistor with an LED?
When hooking up an LED, you are always supposed to use a current-limiting resistor to protect the LED from the full voltage. If you hook the LED up directly to the 5 volts without a resistor, the LED will be over-driven, it will be very bright for a while, and then it will burn out.
What resistor do I need for LED?
The resistor must have a value of at least 183.3 ohms. Note that the voltage drop is 5.5 volts. It would have been possible to connect additional LEDs in the circuit.
Are LED brake lights worth it?
LED tail lights may last for 10 years or more because they are highly durable. Unlike their traditional incandescent counterparts, they are less susceptible to breakage because they do not have a filament and the heat they produce is highly concentrated.
How do I connect 220v to LED?
How to Assemble
- Connect black anode of diode to negative of the led 0r as you want.
- connect the resistor to the positive of the LED or as you want but circuits should according to rules.
- Connect the free ends of the diode and resistor to the male pins.as shown in the pic.

Can I connect a LED directly to a battery?
An LED has almost no internal resistance. Therefore, if you hook it up directly to a battery, it will burn out quickly as the current flows unimpeded through the LED. You must add a resistor to the LED circuit.
Where does the resistor go on a LED?
Since this resistor is only being used to limit current through the circuit, it can actually be located on either side of the LED. Placing the resistor on the positive (anode) side of the resistor will have no differing effects from placing the resistor on the negative (cathode) side of the LED.
Should I put a resistor before or after the LED?
It doesn’t matter! The resistor can go before – or after – the LED, and it will still protect it. the current that flows out of a battery is always equal to the current that flows back into the battery.
What resistor do I need for 3v led?
Basics: Picking Resistors for LEDs
|Power Supply Voltage||LED Color||Resistor (calculated)|
|3 V||Red, Yellow, or Yellow-Green||48 Ω|
|4.5 V||Red, Yellow, or Yellow-Green||36 Ω|
|4.5 V||Blue, Green, White, or UV||48 Ω|
|5 V||Blue, Green, White, or UV||68 Ω|
What happens if there is no resistor?
In practice, for a large capacitance and/or small resistance, there could be enough heat to melt the wire, or even cause sparks or explosions (don’t try it at home!) The energy has to go somewhere- it could go into heat, light, or mechanical energy.
How many LED load resistors do I need?
If the same circuit wire is feeding into the two bulbs on each side of the truck, you should only need one resistor on each side, in-line with the circuit before the bulb (for a total of two).
Do LED load resistors get hot?
These resistors get very hot when under constant load but for a turn signal, it won’t get as hot – still, securing to a metal surface is critical.
What size resistor do I need for LED tail lights?
If you only installed 2 LED bulbs, one for each of the tail light/turn signal/brake light for example, then you need 2 6 ohm resistors. The wattage should be 50watts.
